By revisiting the archetypes of the traditional circus, the company Tempo d’Eole aims to question our modern society: patriarchal, hierarchical, disconnected from animals and from its own nature. At the heart of the project is the desire to reflect on our identities—on gender, on species—and on the roles this leads us to take on. In a falsely nostalgic mode, we will use the image of the traditional circus, hierarchical and patriarchal, to develop an allegory of our current Western society and challenge the codes and boxes imposed on us.
He wears the hat, he holds the whip, and people obey him. He runs the circus with an iron fist. His horses are harnessed, his girls are beautiful, his boys are strong, his costumes are impeccable. When it’s time for his grand finale, everything is in place: gold and glitter shine before the eyes of fascinated spectators, and he holds the reins of this perfect machine.
But whoever creates power creates jealousy; whoever creates order exposes themselves to disorder. Backstage, whispers rise. In the stables, hooves stamp. Alliances are forged in the shadows of the stands. They try, they whisper to him, they warn him. He doesn’t hear; he pulls a doubtful face…. At the height of success—the circus’s grand finale—the time for blood has come, the time for mutiny. The horses will survive, but Man will almost certainly succumb.
